Annual Awards Banquet Announced

The Annual Awards Banquet for Beech Bend Raceway and Music City Raceway will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. The track champions and award winners from each dragstrip will be crowned. This year's banquet will include an opportunity to tour the Corvette Museum, a delicious dinner, cash bar, Year in Review picture show, and many door prizes. Banquet ticket order forms and voting ballots will be on each track's webite soon. We hope you join us to honor this season's champs!

Thunder Valley hosts one of the largest Super Chevy Shows on the calendar, September 23-25. For more than 30 years, the Super Chevy Show has been known for some of the most exciting bracket and exhibition racing in the country and this year is no different. Add the Fas Mart Thunder Valley Mayhem presented by Beef O'Brady's on Saturday night, September 24 and this show is a can't-miss event.

Fans should prepare themselves for the ultimate evening of entertainment, including fast machines, extreme thrills and edge-of-your-seat excitement. Details on exhibition acts will be released as soon as they become available.

Thunder Valley Mayhem exhibition runs will take place at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the Pro Mods and Jet Cars will run again on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Those in attendance will have plenty of activities to keep them busy all weekend. Bracket racers will flock to Thunder Valley to take part in exciting racing action in Bracket 1 (Super Pro), Bracket 2 (Pro), DOT and True Street. The True Street cruise will take place at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Fans also will get to see a spectacular selection of some of the region's best classic and modern Chevys. Chevy die-hards will be impressed with the attention to detail given to these show machines. The Super Chevy car show is one of the biggest and best Chevy car shows around. Bowtie fans will not want to miss it.

Anyone interested in locating new products for their restoration project will want to visit the Performance & Restoration Marketplace. If that hard-to-find used part is nowhere to be found, the car corral and used parts swap meet is definitely the place to go.

Gates open Friday at 9 a.m. with racer tech inspection. A Test and Tune session is scheduled for noon. Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday with Car Show registration and tech inspection also beginning at this time. Time trials take place from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday's bracket racing begins at 3 p.m.

Saturday's Fas Mart Thunder Valley Mayhem presented by Beef O'Bradys has two pro show sessions scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Spectator Admission is $10 Friday and $20 both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's admission includes Thunder Valley Mayhem. A weekend pass is available for only $30. Ages 10 and under are $5 per day, or $10 for the weekend. Full hook-up camping is available for $100.

I had the pleasure of shooting a series of photo's of a local racer. This is John Labbous, Jr. of White House, TN. Here is my interview. (Q) How long have you been drag racing? (A) 21 Years (Q) Did you start out in a dragster? (A) No, my first year was a door car. I still run door cars today sometimes. (Q) John, what is your most memorable race event? (A) It would have to be The 50 at Michigan during the 2009 season. (Q) John is there anyone you would like to thank? (A) First, I would like to thank my family. And then I would like to thank Digital Delay.

I was at Beech Bend Raceway today for the POCI. The Pontiac's have invaded Bowling Green, KY. this weekend. Today they run times down the drag strip. Tomorrow (Saturday) they will have a huge Pontiac car show at the track and more drag racing. Come on out for a fun time and see some old Pontiac's like you haven't seen in years.

I had the pleasure of taking these photo's of Kimberly. She is Kimberly DeShields of Norwich, CT. I really enjoyed talking to her and getting an interview. Here is my interview with her. (Q) How long have you been racing bikes? (A) I have been racing for three years. (Q) How did you get started racing? (A) My brother raced. (Q) What has been your best performance? (A) I finished second in Mississippi on the 1/8 mile track in 2009. (Q) What kind of ET do you nornally have? (A) On the 1/4 mile I stay around 10.90 to 11.50 (Q) Who do you pilot the bike for? (A) The owner of my bike and team is Chuck Newman. Chuck is from Murfreesboro, TN. He has been involved in bike racing for 30+ years. My brother rode for Chuck for about three years. Chuck is also my Crew Chief. He has been racing with the AMRA series from the time Marty bought the AMRA series.

I would again like to thank Chuck and Kimberly for their time and friendship. I look forward to seeing you guys again in September. By the way Kimberly was the #1 Qualifier at Beech Bend this June. Good Job! and Good Luck in 2011.

9^th Annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion presented by AAA
June 16-18

BOWLING GREEN, KY (Monday, June 20, 2011) – It was a wet and wild Father’s Day weekend for more than 400 racers competing in the Hot Heads Research & Racing Eliminations at the 9^th annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion presented by AAA at Beech Bend Raceway Park, June 16-18. Rain storms on Friday and Saturday put racing on a temporary hold. By late Saturday evening, 11 nostalgic racers were crowned and celebrating with family and crews in the Winner’s Circle.

In Nostalgia Top Fuel, Lincoln Hassell of Raleigh, NC defeated Jim Young of Salem, Wi who ran at the top round after round but in the finals his engine failed and was unable to run. Hassell had the win in the bag with a run of 12.167 et at 69.89 mph. Hassell and his team felt shorted in the win, nonetheless, they were extremely happy and pumped up enough to head out to the 20^th California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California, Oct 21-23.

“I feel bad with the way that we won against Jim Young who was racing so well, but still so pleased that we ran good and it’s the first time we ran this car in 5 years” said Hassell. “I’m just so glad to be racing here on hallowed ground in Bowling Green. We look forward to this race every year and with this win we’d like to head out to California for the annual Hot Rod Reunion.”

Peter Gallen of Broomoll, PA was having a déjà vu moment when he was crowned Nostalgia Funny Car Champion. This is Gallen’s back to back win at the annual Reunion. Gallen defeated Jon Capps of Las Vegas, NV with a 6.118 et at 237.38 mph against Capps 8.796, 104.96 run. Once again, Gallen celebrated in the Winner’s Circle with his entire crew and lovely family including his toddler son who made it another awesome father’s day celebration.

“I just love this place and couldn’t have done it back to back without my amazing crew. I’m just the puppet in the circus. The one who pushes the pedals,” said Gallen.

In Junior Fuel, Ken Hawkins of Poolville, TX was left speechless and with a huge grin in the Winner’s Circle on Saturday night. Hawkins took the championship with a 7.465, 176.88 against fellow Texan Jeff Jones who ran 7.537 at 170.92 mph.

“I’m at a loss for words right now and thankful for my entire crew and family without these people this doesn’t happen,” said Hawkins.

7.0 Pro Champ Ron Huegli in his 1976 Monza “Tiki Warrior” came all the way from West Linn, OR to run at the Reunion in Bowling Green. He defeated Steve Walczak of Rochester, NY with a 7.073 at 197.16 mph.

“I feel really good we got one win and intend going to Bakersfield to get the second. We drove 2,470 miles to bring it here to Bowling Green and we showed them how it’s done Westcoast style – thanks to Mike Croft,” expressed a jubilant Huegli.

One of the most memorable and historical wins was in the AA/Gas class which only ran a 1/8^th of a mile. It was a first time class that raced at the Reunion and first time win for longtime Reunion participant Fred Bear of the legendary S&S race team. Bear was crowned champion in this class making it his first win ever at the Reunion.

“This is my first national event I have ever won,” said Bear. “When I hit it into high gear, I hollered up to the sky to KS Pittman and said, ‘Buddy, we just won the Holley NHRA Hot Rod Reunion’.”

Storms hit Beech Bend Raceway Park

While shooting photos of the NHRA National Hot Reunion at Beech Bend Raceway Park on Friday 6-17-11 this cloud and storm came up. Needless to say I didn't hang around the drag track and shot this photo as I was taking my photo equipment back to the car. The wind was very strong and I wasn't sure what was going to take place here. The storm didn't last long and didn't do any damage or very little. The good thing no injuries. Today (Saturday 6-18-11) has started out bad as well with rain.

The upcoming Memorial Day weekend brings in the NHRA SportsNational Open race which will feature all the NHRA sportsman class cars plus our local racers running in the BBRP regular bracket program. We will not be running Bikes during this event due to the bike race at Music City.

We will be running Jr. Dragsters on both Saturday and Sunday. Points will count for the regular brackets and for the Sunday Jr. race the Jr. race on Sunday will also be the Jr. Dragster Challenge that has been rained out for the past two Sunday's.

As the races were over and the drivers were leaving the pits, a driver stopped me and told me this. He said he would not be back to Beech Bend Raceway. Apparently some of the drivers got mad at him. I think you front Runner drivers need to post on here and ask him to come on back. If you use your car to take him out you are just a sore loser in my opinion. This is why we don't have car count now, or in part why we don't have more cars. Be a good sportsman and have fun racing. The driver is #23 Tommy Hoover. Tommy hope you change your mind.

The river was up and Beech Bend did have some flooding. But it never got to the tracks. However, I talked to Dallas Jones owner of BBR and he did say that all racers must park on the black top in the pits. Remember it has been extremely wet. The weather tried to work on the drags Saturday night. If I had been a betting person I would have lost the bet on us racing. There were tornado warning all around and storms but we never got the rain. There were some bad cars, trucks and bikes at Beech Bend for the fun night drags. Had some really bad mustangs. In the photo above is Bowling Green driver Joel Greathouse. Joel broke and couldn't make the last run which was the final run. B & B Racing had a bad little mustang in the show too! This Saturday night Cedar Ridge Speedway will be adjusting the start times to help maintain the tracks prime surface! The gates will swing open this Saturday at 3pm central time with the draw closing at 6:15pm. Time trials will rocket out of the lanes at 6:45pm and racing at 7:15.

After winning the modified street class, Matt had his win taken away. The Beech Bend officials found Matt's car to be too light and the wrong tires. These cars had a weight rule and Matt's car was not at the correct weight. They also have a tire rule and he had the wrong tires on. So the win and his time was taken away and both the fast time and win goes to #69 Rita Cline. This in my opinion was the story of the night.

Drag Racers Wife makes her first pass in a drag truck!

Kayce Woods wife of drag racer Josh Woods. Kayce got in the drag truck Tuesday night and made several passes. She did a great job too! Smokin' Joe who calls the races at Beech Bend Raceway said over the PA speakers that Josh may be losing his ride (oops!). Josh was last years champion in his class. He races a car and has a drag truck. I don't know, but Kayce may be getting this truck as her ride. I guess the family that races together stays together. Good luck Kayce! Most drag racers know this guy, but the fans in the stands may only know the car and name. So it was my privilege to talk with Trance Baker. Q: Where did you start drag racing? A: Beech Bend Raceway Park. Q: When was that first race? A: In the mid 70's. Q: What was your first car? A: It was a 1955 Ford. Q: What was your biggest win or event that stands out in your mind? A: Well I geuss it would be the Super Chevy Event, I was the Champion of that event. Q: What was the worst day or event? A: It was in the early 90's that a Transmission broke in between 1/8 and 1/4 mile and I ran over it and almost turned that car over. Q: How long have you been racing? A: I started early but full time it has been 31 years. Q: Can you share your age? A: Sure, I just turned 61 back in August. Q: What is your job away from the race track? A: I own Bakers Collision Center, Franklin, Ky. Q: What is your hometown? A: Franklin, Ky. Q: What is something that you can share with my readers that they may not know? A: For one thing I enjoy the friendship of racing. It's not all about winning. It's about having fun and keeping kids off the street. I helped start the Jr Dragsters. Dallas had a couple cars and I took some kids to other tracks to race.

Mostly young guys trying to get a start in racing. Trance has been very instrumental in bringing young guns into NHRA racing at Beech Bend. Sixteen year old Summer Adams of Goodlettsville, TN. She raced her way to the semi finals today at Beech Bend Raceway. During my interview with her she shared information about her racing. Summer has raced for two years. Her best time is 5.94 and 115 MPH in a 1/8 mile. Summer's home track is Music City Raceway. Her bike is sponsored by Mom and Dad. Clayton Key started racing at Beech Bend Raceway in the 50's. He raced Fords in modified and super stock. 1974 Sports Nationals SS/GA class Champion. Went to the semi finals in eliminations at that event. Clayton was a big inspiration to a lot of racers still racing today. The rain came this weekend. The weather was COLD! That didn't stop the AMRA from putting on a great show. It didn't stop some hardcore Harley fans from watching the drags. I saw this guy standing at the fence while I was shooting photos of the bikes racing. I took his photo because I thought he said it all about the COLD air with his warm red fake beard. After taking his picture I talk to him and he told me he picked up that red beard at Dallas. There was times I wished I had it. I know Marty and Jayne would thank the fans that did brave the cold, rain and elements to watch the bikes race. Again, thanks fans and bikers! See you all in June. Former stock car driver making his return to the oval track in 2011 season. Bobby White will be in his Chevy late model #7. He hasn't driven a stock car for years in a race. I had the pleasure to visit Bobby's race shop yesterday and had a little talk with him. Here is our interview with Bobby. Q: Why race now? A: Well for years I have worked on these old cars and I just thought if I worked on them I might as well drive and have the fun myself. Q: Will you compete? A: Sure I would like to, but commom sense would tell you that at my age and after being out of a car for years I will need a lot of seat time. So I plan on running in the back staying out of the way and getting some time in the seat. Q: But as competitive as you are don't you think you will challenge some of the other racers? A: Hey listen, You have great drivers like Sammy Sanders, the Willis boys, and so many others that have been running for years. Like I said this whole deal for me is to have FUN! However if I get the feel for my old car I might put her on up there in the field. That's not to say a win this year. I just want to stay involved in racing. I may put a driver in this thing at sometime this year, we just don't know at this point. It is all played by ear.

My Comments after the interview: I think Bobby is looking to have the time of his life. He has raced for wins, Championships and has gotten both in his lifetime. Now at this time of his life it is time for FUN. No points racing, no championship, just all about pure fun. Bobby has bought his new racing suit and ready for them to drop the green flag. From my conversation with Bobby, he didn't come out and say this, but I think he would say don't expect too much from me. At the same time I think Bobby would love for you all to be a Bobby White fan! We here at Local Racing News and Rumors by ODELL would like to say good luck and have a great time Bobby.

I was at Beech Bend Raceway today and this is what I saw. Not alot going on due to the rain and cold weather moving through Bowling Green, Ky. However, there were several drag bikes in Bowling Green for the super bad fast Harley drags. Teams from MI., IN., TN., and more. Campers with tents and RV's in the camp ground ready for the races and party. The last report I saw is calling for rain most of the day tomorrow (Saturday). Sunday is looking better as of the last report. On Sunday it is just going to be cloudy (maybe?). So cross your fingers that we get to see the most awesome Harley's on the planet. Founded in 1948, the Cluster Busters is hailed as the third-oldest, active car club in the United States . They will be honored at the annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion presented by Auto Club at Beech Bend Raceway Park , June 16-18.

For the ninth consecutive year, Justice Brothers will sponsor the “Reunion Spotlight” at the annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion slated for June 16-18 at Beech Bend Raceway Park . “We’re looking forward to another great Reunion in Bowling Green . It’s an immense joy to uncover some of motorsports history’s unsung heroes, and this year we are proud to honor one of the longest living car clubs in the U.S. , the Cluster Busters,” said Justice Brothers President & CEO Ed Justice Jr.

In 1954, the Cluster Busters became a Charter Club of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). They advocated safe driving and organized racing on the track instead of the street, and helped change the negative connotation of hot rodding. The Club also organized the first drags in Indiana in the summer of 1955, and formed the Indianapolis Timing Association. One of their tangible contributions was the club’s help in designing and organizing Indianapolis Raceway Park (now the Lucas Oil Raceway, home of the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals).

Since then, the Cluster Busters have continually remained active in hot rodding and drag racing. Some of their members race in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series, including Mark Vaught with his potent A/Fuel dragster entry. The Club currently has over 30 active members. On Sunday while shooting photos at Beech Bend Raceway Park I came across this young lady. I noticed her while shooting each car as it hit the 1/4 mile track. Then she wins a couple passes and I start to pay more attention. It's at that time I take a stroll down the pits to find this young girl. After finding her I do an interview with her. Her name is Laine "Ladybug" Choate. She is only 17 years old and from Pegram, TN. I ask her how long she has been racing? She replied by saying two years. As I was talking to her, she wanted to share with me that her Dad was at Beech Bend Raceway racing a motorcycle. Looks like she is following in Dad's footstep's. As I was preparing to leave she did tell me that the car she was racing was her Uncle's and it was a 1967 GTO. I would like to say thanks to Laine for her interview and wish her good luck with her racing.

“Two-Lane Blacktop” Movie Car Coming to the Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion

Bowling Green, KY. – This year marks the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of the 1971 cult classic Two-Lane Blacktop, starring singer James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. One of the original 1955 Chevys built for the film will be on display at the 9th Annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green , Thurs. through Sat., June 16-18, 2011.

“We’re very excited to have the Two-Lane Blacktop car joining us at the Hot Rod Reunion this year,” said Museum Executive Director Tony Thacker, “ Reunion goers will get a kick in seeing the actual car driven by James Taylor in this classic film.”

According to Walt Bailey, owner of one of the movie cars, three purpose-built ’55 Chevys were constructed by West Coast fabricator Richard Ruth for Two-Lane Blacktop – two identical main cars based on Ruth’s own ’55 Chevy street racer and a third stunt car. One of the main cars was sold to a studio employee and the other two sat on the back lot until they were reused two years later in American Graffiti. The ’55 sold by the studio passed through several owners as a street-driven hot rod and eventually faded into obscurity until located by owner Walt Bailey after a five-year search.

Bailey remembered seeing Two-Lane Blacktop at the drive-in in 1971 while sitting in his own big-block Chevy powered ’55 Chevy street racer. Twenty five years later one of the ’55 Chevys that appeared in both Two-Lane Blacktop and American Graffiti surfaced at a car show nearby in Maryland . Bailey located an old 1983 Car Craft magazine with a feature on the yellow ’32 Ford Coupe and black ’55 Chevy from American Graffiti. Included in the article was a photo taken on the back lot of Universal Studios shortly before filming on Two-Lane Blacktop began. The photo showed the two main ’55 Chevys with the GTO from the movie. Bailey contacted Richard Ruth who reported that he had constructed a total of three ’55 Chevys for the studio. Ruth, who had not seen any of the ‘55s since 1970, recalled that he had heard that the stunt car had been destroyed while filming American Graffiti, which left one of the two main cars unaccounted for. With Ruth’s assistance, Bailey began a nation-wide search for the “lost” Two-Lane Blacktop ’55 Chevy.

When Bailey located what appeared to be the lost ’55 Chevy from Two-Lane Blacktop in Canada , Richard Ruth authenticated the car as one of the two hero cars from Two-Lane Blacktop. Bailey brought the Chevy back to the U.S. where he and Richard Ruth returned the car to its Two-Lane Blacktop on-screen appearance. The famous ’55 is still equipped with a tunnel-rammed 454 big-block Chevy, M-22 Muncie rock-crusher transmission, and an Olds rear, fiberglass tilt front end, fiberglass doors, fiberglass truck lid, and Lexan side and rear windows. The Two-Lane Blacktop ’55 is street legal, driven regularly, and was featured on the extras disk of the 2007 DVD release of the movie. In 2009 the Two-Lane Blacktop ’55 Chevy was displayed at a James Taylor concert where Taylor had an opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the iconic ’55. When Taylor saw the ’55 Chevy for the first time in almost 40 years, he exclaimed that it looked just like it did when he drove it cross country with Dennis Wilson.

This car, plus hundreds of other cool rods customs, trucks and race cars will be on display at the 9th Annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green , Thurs. through Sat., June 16-18, 2011.
